Why should my child(ren) participate in a geography fair project?
Geography helps kids understand the world they live in — cultures, countries, languages, and environments.
It promotes empathy and curiosity about different people and places.
Geography fairs often involve researching, comparing, and presenting information.
Kids learn to analyze problems like climate change, migration, or natural disasters.
Students get to create visual displays (posters, models, maps) and present their ideas.
This improves their public speaking, writing, and storytelling skills.
They learn how to gather reliable information from different sources.
It teaches how to ask good questions and seek out meaningful answers.
Completing a project and presenting it to others builds self-esteem.
They take ownership of their learning in a fun, hands-on way.
Geography fairs turn learning into an adventure.
Kids can explore topics they're passionate about — from volcanoes to world flags, ecosystems to urban planning.
By the end of this project, my child will have:
1) Learned about another country (outside of the United States) and culture
2) Written a summary of their learning/research
3) Displayed their work using a trifold board
4) Shared what they learned by presenting to friends & family
Examples below of what a trifold board usually displays.I also add, a Biblical Connection, learning about Christ through the project.
Highly recommend two books: Children Just Like Me: a unique celebration of children around the world (above)
Children Just Like Me: A New Celebration of children around the world
How can I help my child(ren)?
Start by helping your child/family focus on a country that they are already interested in. Where in the world would your child like to travel, if they could? Perhaps check one of the Children Just Like Me books out from your local library.
Next, guide your child to follow the rubric. A rubric is simply an outline of what your child’s finished project should be like. It’s a guide to help the adults guide their learners. The rubric will be sent to you once you register your child(ren).
Schedule time each week to work on the project, so that it will be done in time for the fair.
Take photos of the process and get them printed (optional, but looks great on the trifold board).
Guide your child in collecting information from quality sources.
Guide your child in writing a summary of their process, including what they learned and what went well/not so well. Do some research with your child. Teach them to site their sources.
Assist with the design elements of their display board/trifold board. Ensure all the major topics learned are displayed on the board.
Encourage them to practice their presentation. Create a short index card with talking points that will help them share the highlights of what they did and learned.
